Believe me or not, I used to write for secondary school pull-out Stuff@School, which is part of the program held by THE STAR to cultivate young journalists. I got to mingle with a bunch of friends who share the same interest with me - writing and although we mainly interact with each other on social media platform, I felt that we were very connected. It was a very spontaneous and fun experience and I'm very humbled to be part of the team in 2015. I know you're probably thinking that, oh, why is this girl blabbering on about Stuff@School pullout and her past that nobody is interested in? Well, to be honest with you, the experience as a Stuff@School journalist has pretty much shaped me into the person I am today. It was the first time I got exposed to so many different and rich cultures in Malaysia and I must say that cafe hopping and getting into the mainstream teenagers-hype is one of them.
Today, my mum suggested we go to Secawan 'n' Such to have our dinner because her friends introduced her to that cafe. And I was like: "Mum, I wrote about that cafe 2 - 3 years ago. I was even raving about the it to you guys because I actually got to chat with a really cool blogger - Silly Epiphany about this cafe (because I was too lame and I didn't cafe hop AT ALL back then, crazy how it was only TWO YEARS AGO right) so I had to ask for professional opinion from a professional blogger so that I could produce a decent piece of shit listicle on "TOP 5 INSTAGRAM-WORTHY CAFES IN PENANG"." Then I was like, never mind, not like it matters. Anyway, Secawan 'n' Such was one of the cafes that made it onto the list. So when my mum brought up this cafe, I SAID YESS of course. I finally got to go to this cafe that I wrote about 2 years ago, how awesome is that lol.

This is a painting by Gabriel Marques, and there is another one at the back of the cafe. I actually took more than these but my computer decided to ruin my blog post by making some of the photos disappear. I tried retrieving them but there is no way to, so you'll have to bear with the lack of photos in this blog post that I thought would be awesome :(
From Facebook official page: A small cafe tucked along the busy Jalan Hutton, we serve overseas inspired food, coffee, and cakes. A place for coffee, breakfast and brunch lovers.
Okay so imma start with the environment and interior. We visited at night, so I felt that the place was very Christmassy because of the yellow lights and the Christmas deco. I would classify the cafe into generally two sections - the first section, which is more rustic and vintage. You can see it from the tiles with traditional Chinese kind of pattern which I assume is part of the heritage preserved architecture of that building situated in a UNESCO site. On the other hand, the other part was at the back of the cafe. It is enhanced with a modern touch, fitted to youngsters / teenagers to hangout or chill. Really love the ambience at Secawan 'n' Such as it gives you that very private and cozy feeling.
Their customer service was pretty okay, but I think they should give recommendations for customers who doesn't know how to decide on what to order (their food menu has a variety to order from!) Also, we ordered pancake, which I noticed later that it was only served in a certain period of time in the morning but they very kindly attended to our request anyway.
Apricot & Straberry Smoothie (RM14)
Pancake (blueberry) RM15.70
Calamari Aglio Olio (RM21.90)
I feel like the price isn't too bad, I would say that the price is almost the same as other cafes? I mean, it's definitely more on the pricey side, but it doesn't feel like a huge hike-up that'll choke you to death if you know what I mean ;) Some cafes do that and I feel like: bruh, you're just gonan chase away all your customers who are mostly young, dumb, broke high school kids *what up lyrics reference haha* Overall, I would say that in terms of the concept, there's nothing much special about this cafe, except for the two mural paintings by Gabriel. In my opinion, their desserts and beverages are their main selling point so definitely check this cafe out if you wanna find a nice place to have breakfast or coffee & tea.
Overall rating:

Love, J.
